1941. The world is radically different from that described by Usual History. Napoleon V reigns over France, where, as everywhere on the globe, for 70 years, scientists have mysteriously disappeared, depriving humanity of major inventions. Ignoring in particular radio, television, electricity, aviation, explosion, this universe is bogged down in outdated technology, asleep in 19th century knowledge, ruled by coal and steam.
It is in this strange world that a young girl, Avril, goes in search of her parents, missing scientists, in the company of Darwin, her talking cat, and Julius, a young street rascal. This trio will have to face the dangers and mysteries of this Rigged World. Who has been abducting scholars for decades? In what sinister but?
